Proficiency Levels (CEFR A1–C2)
The CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) is the international standard for describing language ability. It was created by the Council of Europe and is used worldwide by universities, employers, and language schools.
Your proficiency level shows how comfortably you can use English in real situations. The Cambridge “Test Your English” gives you a quick, reliable CEFR result.
A1 – Beginner
You can understand simple words and phrases and communicate basic needs. Ideal for building foundations and confidence.
A2 – Elementary
You can handle everyday situations, short sentences, and familiar topics. You can communicate simply but still need support.
B1 – Intermediate
You can manage most daily conversations, describe experiences, and understand clear standard English. You’re ready to expand vocabulary and accuracy.
B2 – Upper‑Intermediate
You can participate in discussions, understand more complex texts, and express opinions clearly. You can work or study in English with some support.
C1 – Advanced
You can use English effectively at work or in academic settings. You understand subtle meaning, nuance, and complex structures.
C2 – Proficient
You can understand virtually everything and express yourself precisely, including idioms, tone, and cultural nuance. Comparable to a highly educated native speaker.
